PHILIP READ MEMORIAL LIBRARY NEWS
Grant: I am pleased to announce that I have received a grant of $850 from the Claremont Savings Bank Foundation for programming. This grant will enable the library to have some extra special programming. There are already two programs set for October financed by this grant.
Found: A pair of adult glasses with metal frames was left at the library. Are they yours?
Thank You to Everyone Who Helped with the Book Sale. It was a big success. We couldn’t have done without all you helpers—movers, sorters, bakers and book donors. If you missed cleaning out your books, bring them along (we have storage)—next year will be here before we know it.
The Big Read: I am happy to announce that the library will be part of “The Big Read—New Hampshire Reads Edgar Allan Poe.” This is a state-wide program and many events all over the state will be held in October. The New Hampshire State Library received a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to provide promotional materials and books to the libraries that signed up for the program. See below for the programs we will be holding.
October Events: October will be very busy. We have many programs scheduled for adults and children, some as part of “The Big Read.” See information elsewhere in this issue of PlainFacts.
Saturday, October 6, 10 a.m. – Presentation on Civil Air Patrol Cadet Program for ages 12-18.
Saturday, October 13, 10:30 a.m. – “Poe! Poe! Poe! Stories and Poems of Edgar Allan Poe” – a Reader’s Theatre Production, incorporating scenes from the life and works of Edgar Allan Poe.
Saturday, October 20, 10 a.m., at the Plainfield Town Hall – “Give a Hoot,” a program with live owls by the Vermont Institute of Natural Science.
Monday, October 22, 7 p.m. – Book Discussion: “The Gold Bug & Other Tales” by Edgar Allen Poe.
Wednesday, October 31, Trick or Treating at the Library.
Wednesdays during October: October 3, 10, 18, and 24 – Felting Workshops with Brian East and Amy Rawson.
Join us for these wonderful programs.
Trustee Meeting: Monday, October 1, 7:15, Plainfield School Music Room.
Automation: The library, with the help of several great volunteers, is making progress in automating the library collection. We could use another volunteer. Please call the library if you are interested in helping. Because the Meriden Library will be going on-line sometime this winter, we will be issuing new library cards so that they can be used with the new system. The next time you visit the library, we will issue you a new card—your number will not change.
Local Interest: The fall image of Image Magazine has a great article about Bill Smith and his Auction House. The September/October issue of Upper Valley Life has a fun article about Nancy and Paul Franklin’s corn maze, designed by artist Gary Hamel.
Rt. 12A Clean-up: Our last road cleanup for this year will be on the weekend of October 20. If you regularly walk on Rt.12A, please help us in this community service. A little bending over with the walking is good exercise.
Holiday Closing: The library will be closed on Monday, October 8, for Columbus Day.
New Audios: “Death Comes Silently”-Carolyn Hart, “Ghost Knight”-Cornelia Funke, and others.
New Books: Fiction: A Bartender’s Tale-Ivan Doig, Darling Dahlias and the Confederate Rose-Susan Wittig Albert, Delusion in Death-J. D. Robb, Frozen Heat-Richard Castle, Telegraph Avenue-Michael Chabon, This is How You Lose Her-Junot Diaz, Time Keeper-Mitch Albom, Tombs-Clive Cussler, Wanted Man-Lee Child, Winter of the World-Ken Follett, Next Best Things-Jennifer Weiner, NW-Zadie Smith, Beautiful Mystery-Louise Penny, Kingmaker’s Daughter-Philippa Gregory, Never Back Down-Ernest Hebert; Nonfiction: Felting (perfect for the classes coming up); also a biography of Jack Kerouac-Joyce Johnson; a junior book, Chickadee-Louise Erdrich. Her new adult novel is on order. Lots more coming, too.
