NH Hands-Free Law In Effect
The law stipulates, "No person, while driving a moving motor vehicle upon a way or temporarily halted in traffic for a traffic control device or other momentary delay, shall use any hand-held mobile electronic device..."
In case you were wondering, the new hands-free law does apply to tractors.
- No use of hand-held electronic devices capable of providing voice or data communication while driving or temporarily halted in traffic for a stop sign or traffic signal or other momentary delays
- This includes cell phones, GPS, tablets, iPods, iPads or other devices that require data entry
- Emergency calls to 911 or other public safety agencies will be allowed
- Bluetooth or other hands-free electronic devices will be allowed
- One hand non-cellular 2-way radio use will be allowed
- Teen drivers under the age of 18 will not be allowed to use any electronic devices (hand-held or not) except to report an emergency. Anyone violating this will be subject to penalties and license suspension or revocation.
- If your vehicle is not equipped with Bluetooth functionality, auto service centers can install after-market systems or over the ear devices can be purchased at retailers such as Staples, Best Buy or your cell phone carrier.
Be Aware: Protect Yourself from Scams!
We have received a number of complaints about phone and email scams in our community. Currently, IRS scams are 'in season.' You can get more information about IRS scams at https://www.irs.gov/uac/Tax-Scams-Consumer-Alerts. Whether it is callers from a foreign "Lottery" or people claiming to be from the IRS or Microsoft or your credit card company, here are some things you can do to protect yourself.
Protect your personal information!
- Never give personal information over the phone unless you have initiated the contact. Legitimate businesses will never call you and ask you to ‘verify’ your identity or account information.
- Never respond to an email asking you to verify your identity by providing personal or account information, either directly or through a web page it takes you to.
- Never open an email attachment unless you are completely certain of its origin.
- Never download a file to your computer because an unknown caller has asked you to do so.

Finally, residents are receiving calls from various ‘charity’ organizations. Some are legitimate and some are not. You should be skeptical of fundraising requests from organizations you do not know. Before you give, you can go to GuideStar at http://www.guidestar.org and get free information about the finances and reputation of any charity or non-profit organization.
